Management and Leadership Transitions

Posted on Wed Feb 8th, 2012 @ 3:38pm by Rear Admiral Relau Chlan (Ret.)

Hey all,

Your friendly management staff here. We'd like to share with you our vision for the future. Simply put, there are a few things that we as a group would like to focus on. I would like to make it clear from the beginning that this is strongly and highly recommended for you to participate in, but we are not making it mandatory at this time.

Our Vision - The crew of the USS Shanghai-A will not only improve as writers, simmers and community members, but will have fun while doing so. Our website will be top notch, our simmers the best, and our missions outstanding. Not only will we retain crew while Independent, but we will be held to an even higher standard, as we represent ourselves. Our crew has what it takes to make this happen for all. We will not be second rate, be bested or be brought down. The crew of the Shanghai will go into the unknown of space so that we can all have a part in what we love - the Star trek universe.

Now, that's our vision for the future. We are also rolling out new changes that will take place within the next week. First of all, we are transitioning to a new management style and structure. Instead of having Jools, Nathaniel and myself do all of the work, each simm member will get to be in a department that they will grow in. You will be assigned a department based on your personal preferences at the start of the transition. There will be three main departments. They are broken down below.

Department of Operations

The Department of Operations is headed by William (Rear Admiral Chlan) and works in conjunction with the other two departments. This specific area is tasked with website updates, maintenance, graphics, advertising, creation of webpages, behind the scenes work, and the general day to day running of the simm. Team Members in the Department of Operations will talk, discuss, implement and approve new website visions, as well as work with other departments to share in the vision for the Shanghai and create department specific policies, procedures and collaboration across the simm.

Department of Mission Readiness

The Department of Mission Readiness is headed by Nathaniel (Captain Sun Mei Xiang) and works in conjunction with the other two departments. This specific area is tasked with missions, plot twists, updates, ideas, brainstorming, community outreach, mission retention, mission timelines and mission tracking. Team Members in the Department of Mission Readiness will talk, discuss and submit for approval, mission ideas, timelines, community outreach programs, plot twists, polls and other things related to the missions, both at hand and in the future, as well as work with other departments to share in the vision for the Shanghai and create department specific policies, procedures and collaboration across the simm.

Department of Personnel Management

The Department of Personnel Management is headed by Jools (Commander River Morgan) and works in conjunction with the other two departments. This specific area is tasked with personnel matters (not to be confused with personnel discipline, which is taken care of at the command staff level), personnel retention, awards, recognition, pending applications review, website analytics and traffic, and simm image. Team members will talk, discuss and submit recommendations for these items, as well as work with other departments to share in the vision for the Shanghai and create department specific policies, procedures and collaboration across the simm.

These departments were chosen with a specific purpose in mind. They will enable everyone on the simm to learn leadership and management skills, have a stake in the future of the Shanghai and enjoy the simming experience more fully. While we will choose your team, you will rotate departments every 4 months, in order to get the full range of the experience.

Now, I'm guessing that you have questions. Here is a short FAQ about the new management and leadership styles.

Q: Does this mean that I have to spend more time on the simm?
A: Yes, to some degree. We ask that you input with ideas when asked, and take on projects when they become available. For example, you might be asked to create a wiki page based on the races found on the simm (D-Ops). Or perhaps screen applications (D-PM). You can also have a say in our next mission (D-MR). But, this is on your own time, normally within a specific time frame, such as over the course of a month, for a major project, along with collaboration.

Q: I don't like (Department). Can I switch?
A: When the four months are up. We do this so that we don't have a huge lopsided department.

Q: I have a great idea for (Department). Do I have to wait to share it?
A: Absolutely not! We encourage collaboration across departments, in order to share our talents.

Q: If I'm put in charge of a project, do I have the final say in it?
A: Each project is brought to the command staff for overall implementation to create uniformity across the board. There is no change to any policies that govern your use of the website, including the Rules and Regulations.

Q: Do I absolutely have to participate? I have (school, college, military deployments, family, real life) to deal with as well.
A: This program is not mandatory, however, we want everyone to be involved in some way or another. If that's just your occasional input, then that is fine. If you have an overriding concern, you may speak to your Department Supervisor for alternatives that might fit your schedule, including extended timetables for projects.

Q: Why this, why now, and why me?
A: We want to not only help you out in your simming, but create a community here that is based on mutual respect and good work ethic. By implementing this, each of you has a stake in the Shanghai, a share of it, if you will. Just like a real company, their real assets are the people that work there. Our assets are our people as well, and we want you to be involved in it.

Q: Doesn't this leech the fun out of the simm?
A: It shouldn't at all. We have structured this so that you get more one-on-one time with the command staff, more input on the website and a better simming experience. It isn't just about William, Nathaniel and Jools. It's about you too. We're all in this together, and we are a team. With this, we can do anything we set our minds to.

Out of all of this, please just get this - we as a command staff want you to be happy and to have fun on the Shanghai. That is our entire purpose for being here. Please let us know if you have comments, questions, concerns or other topics you'd like to bring to our attention. This will be implemented over the next week, so watch your inboxes regarding updates.

As always, we thank you for your time and wish you the very best.

Your Command Staff,

William
