Something From The Road

Computer, begin recording.

Hey dad!

It's been a long time since I've chatted with you, and I'm sorry that I haven't been as active as I have been in writing you lately. I was able to get transferred to another ship after my medical leave was up. She's a beauty. The USS Shanghai-A. I've read about her in the news reports. Very prominent ship. Lots of shakeups in the upper brass lately though. There used to be a Rear Admiral commanding her, but he got bumped out for something or another. Lots of people seem to know about it, and they're very loyal to him, so I don't expect much in the way of answers until later on that subject, once I've drunk with them.

You'd be proud of me, I'm sure. This ship has a storied history, just like our family name. I know, you think that I am a bit old-fashioned, but you know that I have to respect mother in this. She was the one that really kept us all together after everything happened at once. I suppose that I'm getting off topic though. Back to the Shanghai!

So I met this Ensign the other day who thinks that foxes are almost as cool as dragons. I mean, yeah, that's quite true and I know that I should respect everyone here - well, that's not what I'm getting at. I guess that I'm just excited that someone here actually enjoys animals as much as I do. I've not had drinks with him yet, but I need to. Just to try and start a friendship. Yeah, I know that my other friends are just a subspace call away, but if we're running silent for some combat reason (which this ship seems to get a lot of) then it's hard to keep a courtesy call on the calendar. I'm sure they understand.

This ship has a very interesting science department. It's really more of a space physics lab. And I need to be careful about what I say, because I just got my security clearance back. I'm sure that this will pass his desk (Hello, Commander Barnes! We should set up a time to... relax?) so I can't really go into a ton of detail. But it's a great exercise in my knowledge and I feel that I will fit right in here. I met the Counselor the other day. She was a nice lady. Very skilled in her trade. No, I didn't spill my guts out. It was a chance to try out my new poker face. Failed a bit, but hey, we can't all be perfect.

I've also met a lot of other people, but the one that really stands out is the Captain. Boy is she something else. I've heard a lot of whispers about her around, and I'm not going to sully any names here, but there's a lot going around the scuttlebutt about her. Captain Sun, as she prefers to be called. Still in the traditional sense. I suppose it's only fitting that she's Chinese on a ship named after a Chinese city and that has a dragon painted on the hull. Honestly, I think that I'll attach a picture to this letter, just so you can see what I mean. Obviously hugely against regulation, but no one seems to care much for that out here. This ship gets the job done, and gets it done effectively enough that no one really asks questions. There's tons of information that I'd love to see about past missions, but I assume that only she and Rear Admiral... Chlan? I think his name is, anyways. I'd have to check on the spelling. ...Yep, that's right. I assume that only they know the full history. And Admiral Chlan is A) not talking and B) well, you don't rub shoulders with even retired Admirals on a ship as a low Lieutenant.

I know, if you were here, you'd tell me to man up and get him as a mentor. But I'd honestly rather have another here as a mentor. Kind of got off on the wrong foot with him, but I seem to think that I've not alienated him too bad.

Regardless, I have a few things that I need to complete. Maybe by the time this gets to you, you'll be able to read it for yourself. I hope to hear back from you every single day. The nurses assure me that you can hear it... So I'll say this to you, father. I love you. Be safe. And get better soon.

Your Son,
