Bittersweet Memories

Posted on Thu Oct 19th, 2017 @ 1:01pm by Lieutenant Christine Descharmes

Mission: Shakedown Mark II
Location: USS Shanghai-A, quarters
Timeline: shortly after leaving Cait

With a deep sigh, Christine set the PADD on the desk in front of her and leaned back in her chair. She rubbed her eyes tiredly. There was only so much reading she could do. The time flashed 0300. She had five hours before she was due to report for Alpha shift. Christine mused that she could call in, switch shifts with one of the junior counselors. But no, that wouldn't help with her sleepless nights anyway. The computer terminal had the latest news from around the Quadrants, for even a sliver of news concerning him.

Him. When first the thought, then the image, surfaced in her mind unbidden, her bottom lip began to quiver and a few tears fell from her green eyes. They rolled down her cheeks onto her plain white tunic. After a few minutes of silent sobbing, she composed herself and turned around to survey the fairly large quarters. Everything she had kept the same. Exactly the way he had kept it himself, minus the addition of her things. It was always the same. He would disappear for a was part o his job, but he would always come back. Those memories left a bittersweet taste in her mouth.

Except for the last time. One morning he was just gone...Not even a good-bye. Christine knew that was the nature of his work. It was going to happen, sooner or later, she had hoped they would have more time together. And hence why she had never changed, not even to return to her own quarters. One day he might come sauntering in, as if nothing had happened, as if he was never gone. With his same old smile. But the days turned into weeks, and then months, and not even a word.

He will come back. He always does, Christine reminded herself. Until then, she would cope, she always had. She turned the monitor off, leaving her alone in the dark, the light of the stars streaming by as they headed to their new assignment. The counselor gazed out the window for a few minutes before she moved to the bed. She lay down and her blonde hair sprawled across the pillow as she turned from the wall towards the middle, prepared for a night of unrest.
