The start of something interesting

Mission: The Time That is Given Us
Location: Various

The Shanghai was an impressive ship. Wale had never set foot on a Vesta-class starship before, much less one that had come from the future. Though the ship had only travelled two years or so back in time, some of its systems incorporated technological advances that were still listed as being in development in the current Starfleet technology journals. Its role as a scientific explorer meant that it was equipped with bleeding-edge scientific equipment. He had the opportunity to play with equipment that most of his former colleagues could only dream about.

He'd spent the better part of the day meeting his new staff exploring Deck Six, the hub of the ship's Science division. He was thrilled by the possibilities for exploration, discovery and innovation that he'd seen, and had scheduled several meetings with the section heads to discuss future projects.

His stomach started growling. He looked at his data PaDD, and the list of departments that he hadn't yet seen. The ship's clock showed that the shift change had occurred a long time ago - the section heads were long gone. He'd have to settle for meeting them the next day.

He squared away everything in his office - he had always prided himself on being tidy, at least as far as the workplace was concerned - and headed for the mess hall.

Isabelle had been busy in her office getting the room sorted so it felt comfortable the way she liked it. She also caught up on a few personnel files. That done she was feeling hungry so she decided to head to the mess hall for something to eat.

Wale walked along the corridor at a brisk pace when a stunning woman with bright red hair walked out of a side corridor a few paces ahead of him. He smiled broadly and fell into step behind her.

"Do tell me we're going to the same place," he said. "Dinner is so much more fun when it's in good company."

"Then I'll tell you we're going the same way and look forward to having some company!" Isabelle grinned as she looked at the man who'd just joined her. "I'm Isabelle Veran, one of the counselling staff and you are?"

"Wale Scholl," he replied, extending a hand. "I'm the new Chief Science Officer."

"Pleased to meet you Wale" Isabelle smiled warmly. "I was just starting to think I'd be all alone, I'm glad to see I was wrong."

"The pleasure is all mine," he said as he stepped aside to let her enter the mess hall first, and followed her in.

"Thank you" Isabelle smiled as she walked inside. "Any ideas what's good?" She looked at Wake. "I'm not sure what to have."

"That's the problem with having replicators that can provide anything you might want," said Wale, walking up to the unit. "It leaves you wide open to what they used to call FOBO."

"FOBO?" Isabelle looked at Wale curiously. "What does that mean?" Settling on a roast dinner she replicated it as she waited for Wale to answer her question.

Wale settled on a plate of maple lacquered salmon with fries and Brussels sprout chips. He picked up his tray and followed Isabelle to a nearby table. "Fear of better options," he explained. "No matter what you decide, there's always someone else in the room whose plate looks better than what you ended up choosing. For some people that makes it nearly impossible to make a selection."

"Now that I can totally agree with!!" She grinned. "I just try and come in when I'm truly starving because then I find it easier to settle on a dish and stick with it! Otherwise, like you said, I'd end up taking all day to choose!" She sat down and politely yet eagerly ate her food. "Mmmm I do love roast dinners, I just wish it was real meat and not a replicated version of!"

"Don't we all," replied Wale, delicately picking a bite from his salmon. "How long have you been on the Shanghai?"

"A while. Those of us who aren't senior staff kind of hover behind the scenes to be barely seen except when we're called up for our skills." She smiled. "How about you?" She ate some more of her food, pausing to take a sip of her drink.

"I've been here for a little over two weeks," he said. "I actually got here just as the ship was going in for the sensor sweep. This is the first day I actually have the opportunity to set foot in the Science labs."

"So were they as you were expecting? Or is the ship what you expected?" She looked at Wale curiously. "I've only seen the inside of my office so far, I'm intending to have a tour around when I get time to do so." She politely tucked into some more of her food.

"Are you kidding?" asked Wale. "The Science labs are amazing! I have an entire suite reserved for aeroponics. There's no need for an Arboretum on this ship, just take a stroll through Aeroponics. The Life Sciences labs are among the most sophisticated I've seen outside of Starfleet Medical. And I've never seen an Astrometrics suite that had that kind of resolution to its holodisplays. Sensor resolution is so fine, it's almost as if..." He suddenly caught himself and realized the words that were coming out of his mouth just as soon as he said them. "As if they haven't been invented yet."

Isabelle offered a smile. "Well the less said about that the better" she finished off her food and picked up her drink taking a sip. "Seeing as you're so excited about it why don't you show me the Aeroponics lab sometime? I've never actually been in there." She looked at him curiously. "So are you a man who likes dessert?" She smiled as the fingers on her one hand gently trailed across his hand.

Wale grinned as he took a sip of his own drink. "I think you've just read my mind there," he said. "I am a big fan of dessert. Are you sure you're not a Betazoid masquerading as a Trill?"

"Actually I'm both!" She smiled as her fingers gently caressed his hand. "Don't get me wrong, I don't go out to pick up men, I just... feel like some fun company."

"Oh, I can certainly be that," replied Wale. "And as a matter of fact, I do have a wonderful little replicator in my quarters that can give us the most... decadent desserts."

"Hmmm sounds wonderful" Isabelle smiled. "Perhaps you'd like to show me what's available?"

"Mais bien sûr, Madame," said Wale, standing from the table and extending a hand to her. They picked up their trays and returned them to the food dispensers for recycling, before stepping out of the mess hall and heading for the turbolift.

Wale wrapped his arm around Isabelle's waist as they walked. His scientific curiosity was burning to know more about the Trill/Betazoid hybrid, but that could wait. Right now he wanted to know if, like other full-blooded Trills, her spots went all the way down.

"Deck Six," he ordered the turbolift as the doors closed behind them.

As the turbolift doors closed Isabelle turned to look at Wade her fingers tracing a line across his chest as she draped one arm around his neck. “So do you often go around picking up women you’ve only just met?” She grinned a wry grin. “Not that...” She leant closer her lips hovering perilously short of his. “I’m complaining...” Her lips met his in a gentle yet passionate kiss.

"It's been known to happen," he breathed in-between kisses. "Though I'm usually standing on a beach when that happens."

The turbolift doors opened, dropping them off a couple of doors away from Wale's quarters. They broke the kiss just long enough to rush to the door, oblivious to the stares of a couple of junior crewmen who were walking down the corridor.

Walking inside Wale’s Quarters Isabelle didn’t waste a moment, kissing Wale with all the pent up passion she’d got her fingers made short work of his clothing. “Just so you know...” She paused to look at him. “I don’t usually make a habit of doing this!”

"Why deprive yourself of the pleasures life has to offer?" asked Wale, as he released the clasp on her bra. He took in the sight of her naked body and grinned, as his question about her spots was answered.

He pulled her closer into an embrace, and kissed the base of her neck.

Isabelle ran her fingers along Wale's body, one hand running up his neck and intertwining with his hair as she encouraged his kisses.

Wale's mouth found hers, and as they kissed deeply, he lifted her from the ground. As she wrapped her legs around his thighs, he walked over to the bedroom, and he gently eased her on the bed.
